Photography coursework
These are my final outcome photographs from my long exposure project so far,
I will post an photograph of the final display also to get an impression to how I have organised the photographs together.
Until this point of the exam I have been working on long exposures.
In the exam I intend to edit long exposure photographs taken with structures, inspired by Kevin Saint Grey’s work that has been analysed on my Tumblr blog.
I want this piece of work to both finalise my work so far and still leave a platform in which I can further develop my ideas.
For the use in this exam I have taken a photo shoot at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich yesterday.
I will edit and manipulate these photographs during the exam.
I have taken long exposures of the sky, I intend to print these photographs as a triptych and in black and white.
I will print these photographs externally to get the right size and proportions for the photographs that I feel necessary.
My final outcome was relevant to what my project was on, however the subject matter was a bit of a compromise.
I could have also printed the photographs larger give a greater view of the images, I also would have preferred to take photographs of the buildings I listed in a previous post, they where more relevant to the inspiration I took from Kevin Saint Grey’s work.
In the future in order to improve my work quality, I will allocate much more time for photo shoots in order to get the timing and scene that I want to photograph.
This is my final outcome that I have mounted on a wall for an exhibition.
The final photographs could both be larger and the center photograph could be larger to make it more of a triptych.
The sky in the photo looks like the sea and the boat behind the glass looks like a ghost ship, which adds to the serenity and spookiness given by the black and white.
These are a selection of photographs that I have taken whilst on my shoot at the Cutty Sark.
These where taken as reference shots to give me the opportunity to use these in my work If I wanted to.
I haven’t used them in my final outcome but these are just a background to where I took my shoot.
These are my unedited long exposures of the sky at sunset.
These photographs where taken using a 10-stop neutral density filter and generally and exposure of 2 minutes.
I intend to photoshop a selection of these images to the sky in my Cutty Sark shots.
This is another selection of unedited long exposures from my shoot.
You will notice that some of the photographs are dark, this is due to a change in some of the camera settings, I will edit these photographs in order to have the contrast matching the other photographs.
These are a selection of my long exposure shots edited in photoshop.
I have deliberately made the photographs very vibrant and contrasted because I intend to edit them into black and white which I am accounting for the reduction on the images intensity.
These are a selection of my long exposure shots edited into black and white.
It is now clear that the intensity of the image has dropped with the removal of the vibrant colours, I will choose three of the ones I have edited to be used in my Cutty Sark triptych.
This is my photo shoot taken from inside the Cutty Sark museum.
I initially intended to take the shoot with a cloudy sky or at sun set, however the museum wasn’t open for the times that I wanted to shoot.
As a compromise I had to just take the shoot and later take a long exposure shoot of the sky at sunset. I will then photoshop this sky into my Cutty Sark shoot in order to get the shot that I initially intended to get.
Long exposure project - update
At this point in my project I have only taken exposures for seconds at a time.
I realize that in order to improve my work to achieve Kevin Saint Grey’s standard of work, I need to be using much longer exposures.
I have experimented with this equipment and I have found that I need to have either heavily clouded sky for the building shots or take a shot of buildings near water to achieve the effect.
At the time of doing these shoots the weather has been poor and so I will have to compensate with this. Instead I will visit canary wharf to photograph the building complex near the docks, with the docks and boats in shot to get the blurred sections of the photo that create the atmosphere seen in Kevin’s shoots.
In order to do this I will be using the products listed in a previous post
( 10-stop ND filter and shutter release button)
Here in this photograph I noticed that the two people walking down the path are moving slower than a person in front of them.
Because of this the person in front is blurred, and that inspired me to capture a similar effect in another environment.
I came up with the idea of taking a long exposure photograph in a city environment near buildings that will be still; some people will be having lunch or something more stationary and relaxed and others will be commuting to work and in a rush.
This situation will create a dynamic between fast blurry people and relaxed stationary people, this really reflects on the atmosphere in metropolitan environments and It will be a good opportunity to get a shot of buildings for reference to my building shots.
